What does not sit idle is the other half of the same sensor: no flicker banding under the LED floodlights of an evening finish arch or an indoor expo, and flash sync at any shutter speed, which is the single most useful thing you can have when you're fighting cap-brim shadow at a sunlit finish line. The A1 answers a different road-race problem: you are usually pinned to one accredited position on the barrier for the whole race, so reach has to come from the sensor rather than your feet, and 50 megapixels lets you crop into a bib on the far side of the road and still deliver it. This is the frame where the aperture matters more than anything else on the dial. Wide open you get one beautifully separated runner and a wall of unreadable paper behind them; at f/5.6–f/8 the bibs three and four rows back stay sharp enough to be read and matched. A mass start is the single densest frame you'll shoot all day, so it's the one worth stopping down for even at the cost of ISO.

Side-on is flattering and useless for identification — a bib turns edge-on to you the moment a runner passes. Start the burst while they're still approaching, when the number is square to the lens, and let it run past the moment you'd normally take. The frame two or three before the pretty one is usually the one that carries the number.

Expose for the bib, not for the arch. A finisher coming out of a shaded funnel into a lit gantry, or silhouetted against a low evening sun, will give you a perfectly exposed sky and a black rectangle where the number was. Let the background blow. On the A9 III the global shutter handles arch LEDs and screens without banding; on the A1, turn anti-flicker on or drop to mechanical when the floodlights start to show stripes.

These are the easiest frames of the day for a person to read and the easiest to lose: bibs come off, get folded into a pocket or vanish under a foil blanket within a minute of the line. If you want these matched to a runner rather than sorted by hand, shoot them before the bib comes off — and if you're already there with a flash, fill is what lifts a bib out of the shadow of a medal ribbon.

Stop down for the pack, not for the portrait.
f/2.8 on a long lens gives you one sharp runner and a soft crowd — and a soft bib is an unreadable bib, for you and for anything reading it later. In a dense frame, f/5.6–f/8 turns a single deliverable photo into one that can be sold to everyone in it. Depth of field is the setting that decides how many runners a frame is worth.
Remember that eye detection locks the face, and the number is on the chest.
Sony's human recognition is drawn to the eyes, which on a long lens at a wide aperture can leave the bib forty centimeters outside the plane of focus — sharp face, mush number. Either close down until the chest is inside the depth of field, or place your AF area on the chest line and let recognition assist rather than lead.
Shoot the approach, not the moment they're level with you.
A bib is square to the lens while a runner is coming toward you and edge-on the instant they pass. Open the burst early and hold it through: the identifiable frame is almost always earlier than the one you'd have picked on feel, and at a road race you get one pass per person per position.
Use the A9 III's flash sync at any shutter speed rather than fighting the sun at the line.
A global-shutter body will sync fill flash at 1/2000 in full daylight, so you can kill cap-brim and arch shadow without dropping the shutter to 1/250 and reintroducing the motion blur you were avoiding. On a bright finish line that shadow is often the only reason a number isn't readable.
Cull before you tag, and keep the ugly frames where the paper is visible.
The running profile doesn't use the local scene-skip step, so every frame you send is one credit — cull hard first. But cull on whether the bib is readable, not only on whether the photo is good: the running match leans on the printed number, with the name as backup and no face recognition behind it, so a slightly soft frame with a square-on bib is worth more to the day's take than a beautiful side-on one.

What shutter speed should I use for marathon photography with a Sony A1 or A9 III?
Around 1/1000 for runners coming toward you and 1/800–1/1250 for side-on frames on course — fast enough to hold a foot strike and, more to the point, to hold a bib still enough to read. Push to 1/1600–1/2000 at a bright finish line where you're also fighting contrast. Can AI read a bib that's folded, pinned to a hip, or half-covered by an arm?
Sometimes — and it tells you when it can't.
