The Problem with OCR in a Reset Season
RaceTagger built its reputation on OCR — reading race numbers directly from photos. It works brilliantly for most motorsport categories. But F1 has always been the awkward edge case.
At 300 km/h, number plates don't photograph cleanly. Panning at 1/200s — the shutter speed that gives you the motion blur that makes F1 photos actually look like F1 — leaves the car sharp and the number a streak. Low-angle shots from the pit wall show you more sidepod than anything else. Sparks from a floor scraping at Baku don't help.
OCR needs legible numbers. F1 frequently doesn't have them.
For 2025, the workaround was context: livery color, car shape, driver helmet. You'd tag 60-70% confidently, then manually resolve the rest. Acceptable, not great.
For 2026, that workaround breaks. Everything about these cars looks different from last year.
What Changed in 2026
The 2026 regulations are the most significant aerodynamic overhaul since the ground effect era. Smaller cars, dramatically different front wing geometry, active aero that physically changes shape during a lap. Add Cadillac and Audi as new entrants, Hamilton in red at Ferrari, and entirely redesigned liveries across the grid.
The visual shortcuts you've internalized over years are unreliable. That shade of blue? Could be Williams, could be something else now. The silhouette in your peripheral vision at 1/3 second of reaction time? Doesn't match anything your pattern recognition was trained on.
This isn't a learning curve problem. It's a structural problem. The reference library in your head is outdated, and it'll stay outdated until you've shot a few rounds.
How the F1 2026 Model Works
We trained a dedicated computer vision model specifically on 2026 F1 machinery. The key difference from standard RaceTagger OCR: this model doesn't read numbers. It recognizes cars.
It looks at the complete visual signature of each car — livery, body shape, nose profile, sidepod design, wing geometry, sponsor placement. It cross-references what it sees against its training data for each of the 20 cars on the 2026 grid.
The practical result: it works when numbers don't.
- Motion blur — a panned shot at 1/160s where the number is smeared. The model reads the car, not the plate.
- Low angle, sidepod-only shots — no number visible at all. The model recognizes the livery and body profile.
- Sparks and obstructions — floor sparks, tire smoke, barriers partially blocking the car. The model finds what's identifiable and works with it.
- Partial frames — cut off the rear wing, cut off the number. The model identifies from whatever is in frame.
What This Looks Like in Practice
You shoot 3,000 photos at Albert Park over a race weekend. Saturday qualifying alone might give you 800 frames. With 20 cars, mixed lighting from overcast Melbourne skies, and a grid where every car looks unfamiliar, manual tagging is a multi-hour job.

For the frames it can't identify with confidence (low-light, extreme motion blur, car mostly out of frame), it flags them for review instead of guessing. You review flagged photos manually. Everything else is done.

Why Visual Recognition Changes the Equation
There's a legitimate question here: if OCR reads numbers and numbers are the ground truth, why is visual recognition better?
It isn't better in all cases. On clean bib photography — marathons, cycling — OCR at 95%+ accuracy is hard to beat. Numbers are designed to be read. Good light, straight-on angle, photographer positioned to capture the bib.
F1 is different. The cars aren't designed to be identified from trackside. Sponsors cover the number plate. Ground effect geometry means low-angle shots show the car from angles where the number was never meant to be visible. And the sport actively rewards the kind of dramatic, motion-blurred photography that destroys OCR legibility.
Visual recognition works with the physics of the sport instead of against it.
The Australia Timing
The F1 2026 model is live for Melbourne. First race, first round, March 6-8.

One Limitation Worth Mentioning
Visual recognition works on the 2026 specification cars. Mid-season livery changes — teams sometimes run special designs at Monaco, at their home race — may reduce accuracy until the model is updated. We'll push updates as significant livery variants appear on track.
Also: the model works best when at least 30-40% of the car is visible in frame. Extremely tight crops — just a wing element, a single wheel — are outside its reliable range. Flag those for manual review.
The model is honest about uncertainty. Low-confidence identifications get flagged, not guessed.
